Devil Dinosaur

Devil Dinosaur is one of Jack Kirby's wackiest creations. I come from a period in the 70's when Kirby wanted to make comics without having to deal continuity. Marvel Comics did not want any book to be outside of the shared Marvel Universe. Kirby had to base this book in prehistoric times so he could tell the story he wanted.

This picture is important to me because I made it after a friend James Welborn passed away. James lettered Monarch Monkey and was always very supportive of my work.  It was part of a show of comic book art to honer him. This piece is also important because it was really the start of the texture technique I use now. It pains me James can't see my work now.

Sequential Underground #62

Doug De Rocher makes collage comics. No, that doesn't mean he's making comics out of photos from magazines -- he makes cut paper comics. It's like painting with colored paper, razors, and glue instead of paint and brushes.

Doug joins Nick Marino and Shawn Atkins to discuss his approach to art. He shares about the creation process behind stories including Monarch Monkey, The Greatest Time of All Time, and more.

After the end theme, Doug and Nick chat about appreciating all kinds of comics and maintaining the gesture of an illustration.

I will be starting to post some work in progress pictures for my new project. It has taken me some time to get back into the swing of things since the end of last year.

Review and The Greatest time of all Time

The Critiquing comics podcast did a review of Monarch Monkey and other Stories. I feel the critic was fair and will help me with future stories. The only thing the hosts are not sure of is the order of stories in the book are in the order I made them. You can listen to the podcast at Deconstructing Comics. The story they liked the best is the last work in the book called "The Greatest Time Of All Time". This story is indicative of the work I am doing now. These are the pages form that story.
